Mal zart, mal hart – die besten Metalballaden zum Valentinstag
Von (unerfüllter) Liebe können Musiker:innen wohl unzählige Lieder singen. Auch unsere Metalbands haben so einige Zeilen auf Papier gebracht und vertont. Wir haben zu fünf der wohl bekanntesten Metalballaden die Hintergrundgeschichten recherchiert.
Metallica – Nothing Else Matters
„So close, no matter how far. Couldn't be much more from the heart. Forever trusting who we are – and nothing else matters“ – mit diesen Zeilen verewigte Metallica-Frontman James Hetfield seine Gefühle für seine damalige Freundin. Während eines Telefonats mit ihr schrieb er diese Worte nieder. Worte, mit denen sich noch heute viele Menschen identifizieren. Denn der Song verkaufte sich über 35 Millionen Mal und zählt damit zu den bekanntesten Metallica-Hits. Untypisch für die Speed-Metaller spielt die Akustikgitarre die Hauptrolle, Streicher und Tamburin unterstützen. James Hetfield zweifelte zunächst an der Veröffentlichung des Songs, da er ihn zu persönlich fand. „It was a song for myself in my room on tour when I was bumming out about being away from home. It’s quite amazing, it’s a true testament to honesty and exposing yourself, putting your real self out there, and taking the risk, taking a gamble that someone’s either going to step on your heart with spikes on or they’re going to put their heart right next to it, and you never know until you try. That solidified, I think, that we were doing the right thing, writing from the heart about what we felt, and you can’t go wrong that way“, erzählte er der Zeitung „The Village Voice“.
Gwar – Hate Love Songs
Wir haben es bestimmt alle schon einmal erlebt: Manchmal bleibt die Liebe unerfüllt und bringt nichts als ein Gefühlschaos mit sich. All denjenigen spricht der ironische Song der satirischen Thrash-Metalband sicher aus der Seele. Der Gitarrist der Band Mike Derks schrieb den eher punkigen Song „Hate Love Songs“ – „I hate love songs. And I hate lovers. I hate everything that I can't have. So I hate you”. Derks plante, das (Anti-)Liebeslied selbst zu singen – als Debüt seines Gwar-Charakters „Balsac the Jaws of Death“. Letztendlich fand er aber, dass die Stimme des Bassisten besser passte. So hören wir nun Beefcakes Gesang.
Nightwish – While Your Lips Are Still Red
Genieße das Leben und verliebe dich, solange du kannst – das wollen uns Nightwish-Keyboarder Tuomas Holopainen und -Bassist Marco Hietala mit „While Your Lips Are Still Red“ auf den Weg geben. Der Song ist eine Erinnerung daran, uns nicht zurückzuhalten, denn das Leben ist zu kurz. Zu finden ist er auf der Nightwish Single „Amaranth“, der DVD/Blu-Ray „Made in Hongkong (and in various other Places)“ sowie dem Live-Album „Vehicle of Spirit“, obwohl er streng genommen kein offizieller Nightwish Song ist. Holopainen und Hietala komponierten ihn zu zweit für den finnischen Film „Lieksa!“.
Slipknot – Snuff
Auch bei diesem Song gehts langsamer zu als gewohnt. „Snuff“ ist ein düsterer Akustiksong von Slipknot und erzählt von enttäuschter Liebe. Der Protagonist verliebt sich und glaubt irrtümlicherweise, die andere Person würde dasselbe fühlen. Frontman Corey Taylor erzählte dem „Kerrang”-Magazin 2009 die Hintergrundgeschichte: „This is the slow one. It's another personal one. Again, not naming names, it's about someone who helped me through a lot and I thought she felt the same way that I did and then she really let me down. At the same time, it was good that she did, because it was that final push to me figuring out myself. The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory.”
Guns ’n’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine
Das Eröffnungs-Gitarrenriff von Guns ’n’ Roses Gitarrist Slash ist weltbekannt und macht die Ballade zum absoluten Ohrwurm. Den Erfolg hatte die Band selbst nicht kommen sehen, so Bassist Duff McKagan gegenüber dem Magazin „Hit Parader“: „The thing about Sweet Child o’ Mine, it was written in five minutes. It was one of those songs, only three chords. You know that guitar lick Slash does at the beginning? It was kind a like a joke because we thought, 'What is this song? It’s gonna be nothing, it'll be filler on the record.' And except that vocal-wise, it’s very sweet and sincere, Slash was just messing around when he first wrote that lick”. „Sweet Child O’ Mine“ wurde die erste und einzige Nummer-Eins Single der Band in den USA. Die Lyrics stammen von Frontman Axl Rose, der über seine damalige Freundin Erin Everly schrieb und seiner Liebe damit ein Denkmal für die Ewigkeit setzte.
